This Thanksgiving I'm thankful for food, family, and a long weekend I can spend curled up with a good book.

Tor.com was kind enough to get the holiday season off to a good start with their review of The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson. Here's a slice:

The Emperor’s Soul is a worthy addition to Sanderson’s
bibliography: a new magic system with some interesting implications, a
couple of fascinating characters, a focused plot, and a subtle link to
the much larger picture he’s been painting for years. (read the rest here.)

Check out this excerpt of The Emperor's Soul if you haven't already. If you're new to Brandon Sanderson, The Emperor's Soul is a great place to start. It's just the right size for a busy holiday, and will definitely whet your appetite for the rest of his work. And if you're a fan, you already know Sanderson does not disappoint!
Is it possible to create a forgery of a soul so convincing that it is better than the soul itself?

From Brandon Sanderson, the bestselling author of the Mistborn Trilogy and co-author of the final three books of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, comes the tale of Shai, a heretic thief who is the only hope for the survival of an empire. Shai is a Forger, a foreigner who can flawlessly copy and re-create any item by rewriting its history with skillful magic. Though condemned to death after trying to steal the emperor’s scepter, she is given one opportunity to save herself.
The fate of the kingdom lies in one impossible task.
Epic fantasy is storytelling at its biggest and best, from the creation myths and quest sagas of ancient times to the mega-popular fantasy novels of today. Now acclaimed editor John Joseph Adams (Wastelands, The Living Dead) brings you seventeen tales by today's leading authors of epic fantasy, including George R. R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire), Ursula K. Le Guin (Earthsea), Robin Hobb (Realms of Elderlings), Kate Elliott (Crown of Stars), Tad Williams (Of Memory, Sorrow & Thorn), Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicle), and more.

One thing’s for sure—your adventure will be epic.
Today's Library Journal features a rave review for Patricia McKillip's new collection, Wonders of the Invisible World:

"A researcher goes back in time to visit Cotton Mather and finds the preacher’s visions are not what he expected in the title story of McKillip’s (The Bards of Bone Plain) latest collection of mesmerizing short fiction. From the deliciously macabre retelling of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” to the elegant story of courtship and obsession depicted in “The Kelpie,” the 16 stories collected here display the author’s talent for creating tales both delicately beautiful and heartbreakingly cruel. The text of her Guest of Honor speech at WisCon 2004, included within, offers valuable insight into the mind of the writer. VERDICT: Any collection of McKillip’s short stories will be a valuable asset to any library and a joy to her many fans."
Even if you can't hop across the pond to grab an issue, their website is full of genre news, reviews, and original content. I humbly, and with no ulterior motive whatsoever, recommend starting with this review of Wonders of the Invisible World.

Choice bit:

"McKillip's prose — compact and poetical, yet also tough and humorous — is ideally suited to capturing the fragile visions that occasionally haunt, but just as often uplift, her characters. As a result, this is one to dip into, savour and place on that special shelf for books to be cherished."

Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02433901753016151334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3342395472683441777.post-77583857335161436062012-09-17T11:55:00.000-07:002012-09-17T11:55:53.486-07:00Wonders of the Invisible World in Locus, Shades of Sentience

Patricia McKillip's story collection Wonders of the Invisible World is out next month, but this month's Locus magazine will give you a long, detailed list of reasons to check it out, for example:

"I loved all the stories in this collection and if I still have to tell you to try this out, well, you haven’t been reading my review.... Patricia Mckillip is a master at what she does. Strongly recommended."

For something you can read right away, Shades of Sentience calls Wonders "Highly recommended," in a review here.

Elizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02433901753016151334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3342395472683441777.post-9102912689484120262012-09-13T16:45:00.003-07:002012-09-13T17:01:00.875-07:00Look, up in the sky! We're truly excited to announce the summer 2013 release of our anthology Super Stories of Heroes & Villains, edited by the known foiler of Super Geniuses everywhere, Claude Lalumière.
The haiku contest
is almost over, so you
better send 'em in!

I don't think my haiku is a winner, but yours could be! The Singularity Haiku Contest ends Tuesday, August 28th, so get your syllables in line and go for it. Your haiku can either be pro-Singularity (it's happening, you guys!) or con (Nah-UH!) and there will be a winner from each category.

Both winners and top three finalists will get free copies of Digital Rapture: the Singularity Anthology signed by editors John Kessel and James Patrick Kelly, and the winners themselves will be treated to a FREE lunch with Kessel and Kelly at Worldcon in Chicago (lunch seat is transferable to a friend if you are not attending the convention). I've eaten with these guys, and they are some savvy sci-fi fellows, as well as a delight. Trust me, you want to win this.

When the Singularity comes,
will humans be enslaved by artificial intelligence, or will there be an
ecstatic Rapture of the Nerds? In this far-reaching anthology, award-winning
science-fiction writers and acclaimed futurists come together to ponder the
question of who—or what—comes after us. Digital
Rapture traces the history of transhumanity from Charles Darwin to Charles
Stross, from Frederik Pohl’s day million to Ray Kurzweil’s almost-now, from Elizabeth

on the superfluity of humanity.
